If you are one of those people who refuse to shop at thrift stores, THINK AGAIN! Some of my best clothes are those that I found searching through endless racks of used clothing! The best part is that you NEVER know what you're going to find. Of course you will always find those ridiculously ugly clothes that you would never even let your grandmother wear (!) but there are many, many precious treasures awaiting be found and for you to purchase at a sweet deal! Many people donate their high end clothes to local thrift stores simply because they don't think to sell their clothing elsewhere. And chances are, the employees don't know the true value of their products, so you can find things that have a $500 value, for say $20! If you enjoy shopping, then you won't mind taking the extra time to dig through all the clothing and find something you didn't know you were dying to wear!
If you're big into vintage clothing, you can especially find some beautiful crocheted items or floral prints to add to your wardrobe!
Just be sure to look over the clothing for any possible stains, wear, tear, or unsuitable alterations. If you miss a spot and end up buying it, chances are you only paid 50 cents anyways!
If you're worried about wearing someone's old clothes, just take them home and wash them! [Which I recommend regardless if you care or not, even though I forget sometimes!] And you can always wash them twice, though it's not really necessary. And most importantly, you don't have to tell people you shop at used clothing stores if you're worried about your reputation! But don't be surprised if your friends love your "new" outfit and ask you where you got it!
The same thing goes for garage sales! Being in Michigan, I only have a limited summer to go garage-sale shopping, but don't miss out on great finds there too! People are usually looking for any way to get rid of their stuff fast! **Don't be afraid to ask for a lower price, if you think anything's priced unfairly! Only at garage sales though!**
